Does CBD Show Up on a Drug Test?

Whether or not CBD will show up on a drug test is the most common questions regarding CBD. While CBD does not produce a “high” effect, people who have heard about CBD are often hesitant to try it due to its erroneous association with drugs like marijuana which can make users fail drug tests given by your employer.

Why Do Employers Test for Drugs?

Workplace drug testing practices originated in the 1980s after President Reagan signed an executive order requiring federal agencies and contractors to test their employees for illegal substances.

While other employers were not required to test their incoming employees, many began to do so under the piling pressure and financial influence of drug test manufacturers. Since then, the drug testing industry has relied on unproven arguments for drug testing claiming it creates a safer workplace and increases productivity.

How Do Drug Tests Work?

Different industries and employers use different drug testing methods. Some methods used by employers include blood tests, mouth swab tests, hair drug tests, and the most common, urine tests.

Drug tests show the presence of drug residues in our systems that indicate recent drug use. They test for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, nicotine, methamphetamine, and alcohol.

Will CBD Make Me Fail a Drug Test?

While CBD is derived from industrial hemp, it should not be confused with marijuana. Marijuana and hemp are different varieties of cannabis, and they each have very different properties. The most significant difference between the two is that industrial hemp does not produce the mind-altering effects associated with marijuana. That’s because industrial hemp contains insignificant amounts of THC, the compound responsible for marijuana’s psychoactive properties.

Under federal regulations, industrial hemp cannot contain more than 0.03% THC, making it completely untraceable. In comparison, marijuana often contains about 15% THC or more. Drug tests check for THC when testing for marijuana use, not CBD. So if you purchase CBD brands that get their extracts from industrial hemp, you will not fail a drug test.

Is All CBD Drug Test Safe?

Again, only CBD that is extracted from industrial hemp is guaranteed to have untraceable amounts of CBD. Most CBD brands online obtain their extracts from industrial hemp, but you should always make sure by reading about their extraction methods on their website. If a brand does not mention where they get their CBD from, that is a red flag.

For the purest CBD extracts, look for reputable brands which are completely transparent about their extraction methods. Leading CBD brands like Pure Relief will even go the extra mile by making their CBD 100% THC-free.
