How Long Does CBD Stay in Your System?

With more people growing aware of its wholesome benefits, the popularity of CBD is currently at an all-time high. Discussions about hemp and CBD are now so commonplace that many people can recite CBD-related facts such as where it comes from and what it does as though it was general knowledge. However, there is one question that seems to stumble many advocates- “how long does CBD last in your system?”

While there is no conclusive research on this subject matter, there are some guidelines we can follow to help us determine how long CBD lasts.

How Long Does CBD Stay in Your System?

There is no standard scientific metric to determine how long CBD will stay in your system. CBD affects everyone differently due to reasons such as individual tolerance and the quality of the product. However, the two most important factors determining the amount of time CBD stays in your system are the delivery method and dosage.

Delivery Method

Due to its versatility, CBD can be manufactured into a number of products such as edibles, oils, and creams. Each type of delivery method affects how fast and how much CBD is absorbed into your bloodstream, though once in your system CBD will have the same benefits regardless of consumption method.

Generally, the fastest acting and most effective delivery methods are oral and inhalant solutions. Smokable CBD interacts directly with our lungs which absorb and deliver CDB to our systems almost immediately. On average CBD joints will take anywhere from 5-15 minutes to start reacting within our bodies. Meanwhile, oral solutions like CBD oil are easier to use but may take about 20 minutes to start reacting. This is because the capillaries under our tongues take a little longer to carry CBD to our bloodstream.

Other products like CBD edibles and creams are equally effective, but it may take 40 to 60 minutes before you begin to feel their full effects.

Dosage

The main determinant of how long CBD will stay in your system is the amount and potency of the CBD you consume. Because people have different wellness needs, CBD products come in varying potencies ranging from moderate (~500mg) to very strong (~5000mg). Generally, the higher the potency and frequency of your doses, the longer the CBD will stay in your system.

How Long Does CBD Last?

Once it is introduced in our bodies and absorbed by our systems, the effects of CBD will be felt for 4-6 hours, on average. After the first few hours, the concentration of CBD in the blood begins to drop significantly, and users usually stop feeling the effects of CBD after 7 or 8 hours.

How Long Does CBD Oil Stay in Your System?

As is the case with most medications or supplements, traces often remain in the blood and other bodily fluids after we stop feeling their effects. This is also true for CBD, which on average takes 5 days (120 hours) to exit the body. However, moderate and small dosages may take as little as 2 days, while stronger levels of CBD can take up to 10 days.

Does CBD Show Up on a Drug Test?

While remnants of CBD can remain in your blood for days after initial consumption, CBD cannot be detected by drug tests administered at work or school. That’s because the average drug tests check for high levels of THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis. Even the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has dropped CBD from its list of drug-test substances meaning it is completely safe for athletes nationwide.
