What Is Endocannabinoid?

Endocannabinoid

So, what is endocannabinoid?

The term “endocannabinoid,” refers to an internal network within the body. The endocannabinoid system, ECS for short, is “the largest receptor system in the human body.” This system utilizes chemical signallers known as cannabinoids to modulate pain, mood, inflammation, neuroprotection, relaxation, and disease. There are two major types of cannabinoids. Endocannabinoids are produced within the body and phytocannabinoids are found within plants, most notably the Cannabis sativa L. species.

What is CBD?

CBD is an organic compound found in the cannabis plant. Phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids that have been discovered in the cannabis plant. “Phyto,” is simply a prefix indicating that the compound comes from plants. The effect of cannabinoids varies widely, and the endocannabinoid system operates with or without the influence of phytocannabinoids. CBD is one of over one hundred cannabinoids found within the cannabis plant!

In common culture, CBD refers to any number of CBD products on the market. This supplement can be delivered orally, sublingually, topically or through vaporization. The variety of administration methods makes it a very versatile and accessible addition to any holistic lifestyle.

Endocannabinoids

The prefix “endo,” meaning within, indicates that these compounds are produced by the body. The human body produces two of the endogenous cannabinoids, AEA and 2-AG. Both of these terms are abbreviations for chemical names which reflect the shape and function of the cannabinoids. AEA’s full title is anandamide. Ananda is a term in Sanskrit, a common language in India, which means “supreme joy.” A well cared for endocannabinoid system can lead to the bliss and balance we’re all looking for in our daily lives.

Endocannabinoids are known to be produced as needed, meaning that as soon as they are required, the components of these compounds come together, act on specialized receptors or targeted nerve cells, and are then disassembled as quickly as they appeared. These endo-compounds are lipid signallers. The precursors to these endocannabinoid lipids are omega fatty acids, meaning that a common element of our diet influences their creation.

Endocannabinoid Receptors

The ECS utilizes two neuroreceptors, CB1 and CB2. Neuroreceptors are specialized protein molecules that can be found on the surface of cells, and in this case, they interact with cannabinoids. CB1 receptors are largely found throughout the brain and CNS. CB2 receptors are located mostly in the body and the immune system. AEA has a greater affinity for CB1 receptors and 2-AG interacts frequently with the CB2 receptors.

This system is fluid, responsive, and very much alive. When the need arises, the Endocannabinoids are generated to help maintain homeostasis and health. With proper exercise, diet, and supplementation, the endocannabinoid system can be one of the most effective tools we have to achieve joy.

Woman using CBD oil

Benefits of CBD oil

CBD oil can aid the lives of many individuals. It plays an important role in any holistic or fitness routine. The organic compound CBD is extracted from industrial hemp which is a variety of the cannabis plant species. Industrial hemp contains only trace amounts of the psychotropic compound THC. This means that the effect of cannabinoids can be enjoyed without the “high” that is typically associated with cannabis.

CBD and Endocannabinoid System

The ECS thrives on a proper supply of cannabinoids. This robust network plays a natural and vital role in our lives. CBD can be purchased without restriction and can be introduced to our body without any psychotropic effect. CBD topicals address our skin, CBD oils are ingested into the body, and CBD gummies can be a treat for the senses. Enjoying CBD goes hand in hand with enjoying balance and wellness in our lives.
